Match on Action is a shot that makes it seem like the action is happening in one continuous action. This is achieved by one shot cutting to another shot, with the the action still being positioned in the same place. This makes it seem like the action is continuing and not stopping, which creates a visual bridge for the viewer. As seen within the image and extract from Star Wars below, the match on action is used, but continuity of what is going on is maintained. There is a match on action just after the guy in the robe takes his hand off of Luke. There is then another one when they guy in the robe then goes to touch Lukes head, the camera is then cut to a different angle but his hand is still within the same place and moves towards the same place on his head in one continuos action.
Shot Reverse Shot
A shot reverse shot is a shot normally used in conversations. It is where you see a character (normally over the shoulder) looking at or speaking to someone else. This is then followed by a reverse shot of the person they was speaking too then talking. This shot ties in with the 180 degree rule to help make it seem like its one continuous action. As seen within the hunger games extract, when both of the characters are engaging in dialogue, the character keeps on cutting shot from one person to the other, this is the shot reverse shot.
The 180 degree rule
This rule states that the camera should always be placed within the 180 degrees sector it started off in, and shouldn't go pass the line of action, to make sure you don't pass this line of action, its best if you always stay on one side of someones cheek. So if you start off by filming on someones left side and can see their left cheek, then always make sure that you can see this cheek or side. If the camera was to cross this line and break the rule, then it may cause confusion in the audience as both characters may seem to be talking and looking at the same place. By obeying this rule it helps the audience to get a better understanding of the location, and where the characters are in respect to this. An example of this is also within the extract above of hunger games, when the characters are talking to each other the camera is always staying on Katniss' right cheek, and doesn't go through the line of action which is situated through the characters.
